The systems we install
Welded mesh
Rigid mesh panels on posts. The general purpose commercial perimeter: clear sight lines through it, difficult to cut quietly, and it does not look like a prison.
358 mesh
Mesh with apertures too small to get a finger or a standard tool into, which is why it is specified where climbing and cutting are the risks.
Palisade
Steel pales with pointed or rounded tops. Long established on utilities, substations and industrial boundaries.
Vertical bar
Bar fencing where the perimeter is on show as well as secure, and a mesh panel would look wrong.
Temporary and site hoarding
Perimeters for construction and phased works, where the line has to move as the site does.
Mesh, palisade and screens
The sites that specify it
- Industrial and distribution. Long perimeters, vehicle gates in them, and a need to keep the yard separate from the public road.
- Utilities and infrastructure. Substations, pumping stations, compounds and plant, where the fence is the only thing there most of the time.
- Schools and education. Perimeter and internal line fencing, with controlled pedestrian gates. Public sector and local authority.
- Construction sites. Hoarding and temporary line fencing, changed as the works phase through.
- Yards and depots. Where the fence, the vehicle gate and the access control all have to work as one entrance.
What a fencing specification actually has to settle
A fence line is decided by more than the panel type. The things that change the job, and the ones a specification should pin down:
Height and topping
What the fence is keeping out, and whether anything sits on top of it.
Aperture
Whether the mesh is meant to resist fingers and hand tools, which is the whole argument for 358 over standard mesh.
Post fixing and ground conditions
Concreted, bolted down or driven, and what the ground will actually take.
Gates in the line
Pedestrian gates, vehicle gates, their swing or slide direction, and whether they are to be powered.
Wind load and exposure
On hoarding and solid infill in particular.
Working on a live site
Access, phasing, and how the perimeter stays secure while it is being replaced.
Where a specification calls up a published standard or a rated product, we work to it and provide the documentation. We do not make claims about a rating a product has not been tested to.
The perimeter is only as good as the entrance
There is little point specifying 358 mesh and then leaving a gate that anybody can push open. We make and fit the vehicle and pedestrian gates in the fence line, automate them where the site needs it, and wire the access control into the same system.
Made in our own workshop
Bespoke gates, frames and infill panels in a fence line are made in our own facility in Berkhamsted rather than bought in and adapted. Our factory production control for load bearing and welded structural steel is certified to BS EN 1090-1 and BS EN 1090-2 at execution class EXC2, certificate 2273-CPR-4271, valid to 21 August 2027.
Procurement. We hold Constructionline Gold, registration 00322439, assessed against the Common Assessment Standard, and SSIP via Once For All. We carry 8m pounds public liability and 8m pounds products liability. On framework and main contractor work, that is usually the paperwork that gets asked for first.
Fencing keeps people out. Railings mark a boundary.
If what you actually want is a boundary in front of a house, a front garden or an estate frontage, that is railings rather than security fencing, and we make those too.

Common questions
What is 358 mesh, and when is it specified?
358 mesh is a welded mesh with a very small aperture, and it is named after that aperture rather than after the panel: 3 inches by 0.5 inches, in 8 gauge wire. The apertures are too small to get a finger or a standard hand tool into, which makes the panel difficult to climb and difficult to cut quickly. It is specified where the assessed risk is people climbing or cutting the fence rather than simply walking round it, which is why it turns up on utilities, secure compounds and some school perimeters.
Do you install fencing on live sites without closing them?
Yes, and it is most of what we do. Very few of the sites we fence can stop trading, teaching or operating while the line is replaced, so access, phasing and how the perimeter stays secure while it is being worked on are settled in the specification rather than on the day. Practically, that means the line is replaced in sections rather than all at once, and where a stretch has to stand open, temporary fencing or hoarding holds the boundary until the permanent panels go in. We provide risk assessments and method statements for the work before it starts, our engineers and core workforce are directly employed rather than subcontracted so you know who is on your site, and we are Constructionline Gold and SSIP assessed, which is usually the paperwork a live site asks for first. The phasing itself is worked out with you before anybody attends.
